WordPress Website:-

Our goal is to optimize image size without sacrificing the quality of image and there is no perfect way to optimize but there many approaches one can take to optimize images. We can even combine a couple of methods to ensure the image file is as low as possible.

1. Choose the right file format:-

Before starting optimization the first thing you have to do is make sure you have chosen the right file format. The file format which you choose will affect its total size and ability to optimize the image. There are two most common image types which are JPEG and PNG.JPEGs are most commonly used for photographs and general images as they should have some properties.

  • It should have a small overall file size
  • Solid image quality
  • Can be compressed without losing quality.

PNGs are most commonly used for logos, vectors, screenshots and small size of images, these are less in use.

There are dozens of other image types you can find apart from PNG and JPEG, but they are not recommended while images for the web.

There is an exception that if you are planning on inserting a small video first make sure it is in GIF format not MP4. Animated videos can be used to enhance your existing content.

2. Compress Your Images:-

The next thing is image compression which plays an important role. You will need to find the balance between the compression quality and the actual size of the image. In compression our goal should be to find a happy medium between the file size and the level of compression you use. With minimal compression you will end up with a larger file size.

In a high level of compression the image size will be very small but the image quality will suffer and reduce.

Let’s say if a website that relies on high quality images like a photography image then it will take more time to find the balance between the compression and actual image size. But you will be able to use optimization settings for every image moving forward.

3.Image Dimension:-

Normally, when you import a photo from your phone or digital camera, it has a large resolution, and a very large file dimension.

These photos have a resolution of 300 DPI and dimensions starting from 2000 pixels. These photos are well suitable for desktop publishing or print. These are not well suited for websites. One can simply resize images using an image editing tool or software on your computer and reducing file dimensions to something more reasonable can significantly decrease image file size. For example we optimized a photo of 1.8MB file size original dimension and 300 DPI resolution and image dimension of 4900*3200 pixels.

For higher compression we choose jpeg format and changed file size dimension to 1200*795 and it reduced file size to 103KB and it is 93% less than the original file size.
