Of all the fields and relationships available to us for custom and standard objects in salesforce, the Formula field is probably one of the most used ones. Let’s dive more into the depth of the formula data type.
Formula field in salesforce is a read-only field that derives its value from a formula expression that we define while creating it. The formula field is updated when any of the source fields change.

Formula field can return the output value in the following 8 data types.

8 data types

After selecting the datatype for the formula; the formula builder opens up. Formula Builder is a very powerful tool with advanced functionalities where we can build our own formula according to our business requirements and explore it in many possible ways.

Formula builder also has different operators with the help of these operators, we can manipulate data coming from source fields.
For instances where we want to get a result from two input values(considered as operands),

Operators are our bridge between the operands that we are using for the manipulation.

Check Syntax

With the help of this insert field option, we can insert the API names of the source fields that we are using for the manipulation.
It also allows us to insert the fields from the other objects who are in relation(Lookup relation / Master-Detail Relation) with the current object on which we are creating the formula field.

With the help of this Check Syntax button, we can check the syntax errors in our writing formula.
This also displays the error description in such a way that everyone can understand the error and can quickly solve it.

Formula builder doesn’t allow us to create a formula field unless the formula we have written is syntactically error-free.
